…the first line of the NASA mission is "to understand and protect our home planet." Maybe that can be changed to "…protect special interests' backside."

James Hansen, March 2007

When people have no identification with the wildness of the land – do not experience it as sacred – a tiny seed of evil possibility lies dormant in their minds. The seed sprouts when there is a dire threat to what they do hold sacred.

Hi guys. I know we all agreed to a 22 May garage sale at the Tuesday meeting. This has to be rescheduled; I have a commitment in Yosemite then. Please leave comments, dates both good and bad. It can still be at our place on Lazy A.

This is what happens when I try to schedule something without my wife helping.

Reporter Palast in guard tower over Joe Arpaio's jail, Maricopa County, Arizona

Our investigation in Arizona discovered the real intent of the show-me-your-papers law.

by Greg Palast for Truthout.org

[Phoenix, AZ.] Don't be fooled. The way the media plays the story, it was a wave of racist, anti-immigrant hysteria that moved Arizona Republicans to pass a sick little law, signed last week, requiring every person in the state to carry papers proving they are US citizens.

Categories: Credit Implosion, 550 words

Nick Gillespie | April 23, 2010
Have you driven a Ford lately? That might be a good idea, as it seems that GM's claims to have repaid its TARP loans in full and ahead of schedule are, well, bullshit. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) has sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner pointing out that GM has apparently paid back its TARP money with...more TARP money. Here's some of Grassley's query:

07:52:29 am Permalink Reduce The Deficit By Expanding Medicare, Not Cutting It   English (US)

from FireDogLake

Pete G. Peterson will be bringing together a whole flock of like-minded so called deficit hawks to attend a “national fiscal summit.” Don’t be surprised when it turns into a push by a group of millionaires to cut Social Security and Medicare in the name of fiscal responsibility. But if as a nation we really want to get a grip on our deficit the best solution is to expand Medicare, not cut it. Switching to a Medicare for all system, or even just providing everyone with an open Medicare buy-in option would reduce the deficit by hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade.

24 Years Later
The Consequences of Chernobyl

By KARL GROSSMAN from CounterPunch

Monday is the 24th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear plant accident. It comes as the nuclear industry and pro-nuclear government officials in the U.S. and other nations try to “revive” nuclear power. It also follows the just-released publication of a book, the most comprehensive study ever made, on the impacts of the Chernobyl disaster.

Categories: Energy, 61 words

This is from a recent talk by Steven Chu, our energy secretary at an EIA conference. The lower, blue graph is for thin film CdTe (cadmium-tellurium) modules.

At $1/watt, we don't need coal or nuclear. We do need better ways of storing electricty. Pushing this should be maximum priority as production from existing oil fields is depleting at 5-6% per year.

Roger Ebert, well known movie critic, talks about the new movie "Collapse" by Michael Ruppert.

Collapse

BY ROGER EBERT / December 9, 2009

If this man is correct, then you may be reading the most important story in today's paper.

I have no way of assuring you that the bleak version of the future outlined by Michael Ruppert in Chris Smith's "Collapse" is accurate. I can only tell you I have a pretty good built-in B.S. detector, and its needle never bounced off zero while I watched this film. There is controversy over Ruppert, and he has many critics. But one simple fact at the center of his argument is obviously true, and it terrifies me.

06:42:26 pm Permalink Michael Ruppert at Mill Creek   English (US)

Categories: Ordc News, Peak Oil, 157 words

Michael Ruppert was one of the first proponents of the peak oil thesis. This is an amazing treat for Bishop. Sean offers further elaboration:

Greetings Mill Creek Friends,

Just a reminder about this Saturday the 17th:

Please join us and welcome Michael C. Ruppert, author of "Crossing The Rubicon".
He will be here to talk about his book "Confronting Collapse: The Crisis of Energy
and Money in a Post Peak Oil World".

Michael will also talk about the controversial film "Collapse" which was inspired by his book.

Visit Michael's website at: http://www.rubiconworks.com

See the movie trailer at: http://www.collapsemovie.com

We will do our regular pot luck at 5pm and Michael's presentation at 6pm.

*** Please note***

We will be asking for donations to help Michael with his travel expenses. He works hard
to get the message out to the masses and travel is costly. Any help you can give will be
greatly appreciated.

06:26:49 am Permalink Globalization Marches On by Noam Chomsky   English (US)

Categories: International Relations, 1574 words

In 2007, Ralph Gomory, head of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, testified before Congress, "In this new era of globalization, the interests of companies and countries have diverged. In contrast with the past, what is good for America's global corporations is no longer necessarily good for the American people."

To date, growing popular outrage has not challenged corporate power. The future depends on how much the great majority is willing to endure, and whether that great majority will collectively offer a constructive response to confront the problems at the core of the state capitalist system of domination and control. If not, the results might be grim, as history more than amply reveals.
