Click here (actually - click on the title) to fix California's Dysfunctional BudgetTeachers, firefighters and nurses have launched a petition drive to put a majority vote budget on the ballot in November.
Their measure changes the vote requirement to pass a budget from two-thirds to a simple majority and penalizes legislators for failing to do their most important job – passing a fair budget on time.
Year after year Republicans hold the budget hostage and are able to make extraneous demands that weaken our environmental protection laws and undermine worker protections, and they even managed to foist a Louisiana-style "Top-Two" primary on the voters of California – all in exchange for passing a budget which they are already required to do by law.
California needs a majority vote budget.
Please support this effort by downloading the petition kit, and help us collect the signatures we need to get a majority vote budget on the November ballot.
Organizing a petition drive can be a tremendous Party-building exercise and will help energize supporters during this critical election cycle in which grassroots volunteers will be vital to our success. Please make as many copies as you can and talk to your friends and neighbors about the need for an On-Time Budget.
Getting this initiative to quality for the ballot will be an uphill climb for our partners unless our party's grassroots activists engage, organize and mobilize now.
Thank you for working with us.
Peace and friendship,
John Burton

03/15/10 @ 09:25When Selma arbitrarily deep-sixed this agenda item at the last committee meeting she did a disservice to our committee, the State Democratic party, the Firefighters and Nurses and Californians in general.
The deadline for signatures is April 1, so postponing organizing to gather them was not a realistic proposition.
I would like Selma to produce the official action, as shown in the minutes or other documents, which made her chair of the committee. Lacking such substantiation of the legitimacy of her chairmanship she should apologize and step down.
